Judges Choice – Classic Boat Show

This Connecticut based, Canadian built wood classic boat was the one that the Judges selected for their own CHOICE. The Judges Choice Award is a top honor at the Chesapeake Bay Chapter – ACBS 11 acres of classic Wood Boats and other festival events that was held over father’s day weekend in the 18 acres of grounds of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, MD.

Chris’ Shepherd, at 22’, is the larger and more luxurious of the two sizes that Shepherd offered in 1961, with a rear mounted Chrysler Hemi engine that is the top power using a v-drive to get the power reversed so the prop shaft can be under the boat. Smooth and fast, the boat is perfectly matched with the V-8 “Hemi” marine power.

The Shepherds started their company in 1928. they moved the plant to be closer to the water in 1939. The family sold the business to a private individual in the late 1950s. He ran the company with the same attention to detail until 1966, when Trojan Boat Company, from the USA, bought Shepherd  to import the Sheherds to the US and build popular Trojan models in Canada. Trojan was into Cabin Cruisers more than runabouts and re-shaped Shepherd into that mold. Shepherd went on to built up to 54’ in length yachts using fiberglass hulls. By the late 1970s, things had changed for Canadian Boat Builders. These changes caused Shepherd Boats to close its doors in early 1978.

Are these full tank of diesel fuel ranges hard and fast? No. Could one reasonably expect such performance numbers to better understand if this yacht is for you? Yes.

Mainship Yachts kept the same hull as their 34, added on a few inches in the bow pulpit to make for a longer LOA, pushed some things around to get in a nice second stateroom inside and it’s the new and very nicely appointed 2011 model year Mainship Trawler 35.

Never get to stuck on the numbers here with this “35” yacht has an LOA of 39’ 5”, a beam of 14’ 2”,  a somewhat light weight of 20,000 lbs.  Single diesel (or two), bow and stern thrusters (or not, with the twin diesel engines), and flying bridge seating for five plus a bar-b-que and sink, etc make for a tippy motion at sea, but a fine spot to relax after a days run once you are on the hook.

The 34 had just one stateroom, sold well, and I predict that this one, with the two private stateroom will set sales records. Price…about $300 to $400 thousand depending on how one finishes this yacht out.

Oh, BTW, if you like slow and great fuel economy, get the smallest engine they offer. She will cruise slow on less than 150 Hp, the rest of the power is for “beat ahead of a storm” or a “good purchase against a running tide”, etc. The thrusters will take care of any marina  handling issues.

Don Aronow started Magnum Marine around 1966 after he sold Donzi Marine on 188th Street in Miami, FL (Thunderboat Row), which he had brought to market after he sold Formula Marine in 1964. Later, Don Aronow also started Cary Marine, Cigarette Racing Team, SquadronXII, and USA Racing Team. He also designed the first Apache powerboat. Finally he ran some experimental outboard powered racing boats, a Cat or two, an unconventional Unlimited  Racer, etc.   

Get a copy of Michael Aronow’s book (ISBN 0-945903-22-7) to really follow Don Aronow’s life and boat racing / boat building career. Its now a rare book, but a copy surfaces once in a while.

Chris Brown / seabuddy got as far as taking a sea trial in a 27’ Magnum twin small block Mercruiser with Alpha Mercruiser sterndrives before he came to the conclusion that it just was not a fast enough boat for him (she did top speeds in the mid 50 mph range). 

Now Magnum Marine is working on their biggest yacht yet. In 2012 Magnum Marine expects to have their trend setting 100’ yacht ready. That yacht is expected to run three engines totaling 7,800 in Hp through three Arneson Surface Drives reach light load speeds in the low 60 mph range. Magnum Marine and Arneson Surface Drives have made many boat and yacht marriages together. I have sea trialed that combo and its works exceptionally well. Currently, Magnum Marine gives out specs of LOA 95’, beam 20’ and a weight of 147,000 lbs for the 2012 Magnum Marine 100’.
