Evinrude beats Mercury Marine Speedboat Record

World Record Run for Evinrude OMC Outboard Motors

Starflite III, the race boat, powered by a Starflite II, the OMC Evinrude outboard motor is shown setting a new World outboard Speed Record of 122.97 MPH is shown in this photo.

Starflite was the OMC Evinrude name for its 50 Horsepower V-4. In 1960 this engine was made lighter in weight and bigger in its displacement. Now as an 89.46 cubic inch V-4 engine, the next generation top-of-the-line OMC outboard was rated at 75 HP and named Starflite II.

Hu Entrop made a new race boat, Starflite III, a 14 foot long 3 point Hydroplane. At Lake Havasu, AZ in September 1960 he upped his OMC ( his prior Starflite Too had gone 114 MPH) and  Mercury Marine records (his and Burt Ross’s record in another Ted Jones Hydroplane).

Note, it has been suggested that Ralph Evinrude personally contributed with some of his own money to help Entrop with his two Evinrude boats and this round of record setting. Once the next boat came along a racing budget was inbedded within the company.

While the OMC racing effort used a bigger displacement engine than Mercury Marine (89.46 for the Evinrude, 59.4 for the Mercury), they used a pump gas and outboard oil mix to power the engine. He also used stock spark plugs in the motor. Hu did use megaphone exhaust stacks and a almost custom-made racing lower unit. Naturally, the since the starter was removed to save weight, someone had to hand coil a rope around the flywheel and do a rapid pull of that rope to get the engine to turn over (start). The lower unit had no gear set, the engine started in forward gear.

New gas outboards are slowly leading the boating industry out of the recession. It is simple. They are the least clean power source for all boaters, from Center Consoles to runabouts. Thus, the cheapest power plants.

The EPA and CARB require very high clean air standards for gas and diesel I/O engines, as well as marine inboards. Without the very high clean air standards, outboards look like the cheap way to go with a new boat purchase.

It is not a true 37 footer, however, look at this boat’s beam and then look at this beam from a Silverton Express cruiser 31’ which has a beam of 11’6”, or, the Cruisers Yachts 33′ with a beam of 11′ 10″, or, a Regal Marine 32′ at a 11′ 2″ beam. Note, the 2013 Sea Ray Venture beam 11’ 3”. Oops, Sea Ray’s game changer new boat is really a 32’ foot cruiser with a stretched out nose (bow) and stern. Sea Ray is not alone in lenghting their new models but not the rest of the boat. If you approuch a new model at a boat show and think of it as a 37′, one allows for a 37′ pricing. If you think of a new yacht as a 31′ or 32′, then 2013 pricing may seem high.

In any event, a marina charges by the highest LOA it can find on a given boat, so this is an important ongoing cost for a boat owner. One does not like to pay for the monthly charges for a 37′ boat slip, if the boat is a 31′ or 32′, in what it provides.

Any boater will want to think about slip fees as a life-of-the-boat-ownership-cost, before one buys the boat.

And another thing, with just two outboards on an over 30’ boat, one must keep the boat’s bottom perfectly clean. Most center consoles of this size use three or four outboards to adjust their performance for this issue. That gives an always powerful hole-shot or good acceleration from low speed to planning speeds with slightly dirty boat bottoms. Outboards simply do not make the torque like a stern drive, thus one needs more of them or a perfectly clean bottom.

300 Horsepower Mercury Verado outboards are 158 cubic inch displacement gas engines each. Engine displacement is a good indicator of get-up-and-go torque. This new Sea Ray Venture has two of these. If the new Sea Ray was powered by two Mercury Mercruiser I/O engines it would have two 350 cubic inch displacement gas engines (you can see that you need at least four Verados to match up with two small block Merc I/O engines). This throttle lag is an issue with bigger twin outboard powered / engined boats. Think of the weight of passengers, full fuel, some water, and a somewhat filled holding tank, too, when you test boat. If it were powered as many used inboard boats are, it would have two 454 cubic inch displacement (big block) gas engines. Take a ride with a dirty bottom boat example before you form your opinion on a new Sea Ray. You and I know it will be OK with a clean bottom. They are a good company and do lots of pre-production boat tests. The metal and paint finish of a Mercury outboard is the same as a Mercury Mercruiser I/O. So, if you do not like the idea of a I/O boat, an outboard one is not any better choice for you. Both should be kept on a lift when in salt water while not in use or in a dry stack storage building, but many dry stack marinas will not take a 37o model boat. Their equipment will not balance it properly moving it around on land.

By the way, Sea Ray has been cutting back on USA boat building staffing and now only make certain 2012 models in Europe and, starting in the fall of 2012, will start to make some 2013 model Sea Ray boats in South America.

Donzi Marine power boats has made go-fast runabouts since its founding by Don Arronow. He was a building contractor that made some money and “retired” from the North East to south Florida at the early age of 32. Don, “The King of Thunderboat Row” got restless and started boat building and racing boats first built by others but quickly decided to build his own brand of high-performance boats and add to his boats allure by winning races all over the world.

In 1964 he made the 16’ that became the Sweet 16 footer. Arronow sold Donzi Marine power boats in May of 1965. He did stay involved with the company even after he no longer owned it. In 1966 Donzi brought to the marine marketplace their 18’ hull. Then in 1967, they brought out a 14’ with multiple deck designs. They even made a few examples of a 10’ Donzi dingy and a 24’ Donzi Spitfire model along the way to the late 1970s.

It was in 1978 that they made a 22 foot performance boat; first as a Criterion model name that offered three different decks. One was a long fore deck – single bench seat – full width windscreen model, another was a bow rider with a walk-thru to the bow seats, and the last with a no-walk-thru to a separate forward cockpit with a two person rumble seat inside it. These did not sell as well as the company thought they should, so they made a new model in 1981 using the existing hull with a far more traditional single larger cockpit. That boat was called the Classic 22’. It is this model that seabuddy is discussing in this post.

Get a boat with a 454, 496, or 502 engine. They only weight about 160 lbs. more than a small block package and have way more punch. Get an engine with the cam that makes less power at 3,000 rpms but more power over 4,000 rpms. These engines are rated to be propped in the 4,600 – 5,000 rpms and can benefit (in a fast boat like a Donzi 22 Classic) to run wide open even at even higher rpms. If yours is strong enough to turn a 27” propeller up to 5,200 – 5,250 rpms, you have a boat capable of being GPS verified as a 76 – 79 mph Hi-Po boat.

Four Outboards on a 39 Center Console boat

Here is a boat that gives you a reason to buy a new outboard center console boat. She can use 4 outboards, carry up to 40 rods, and boat (land) a fish easily.

This is a big fishing boat. The Sea Vee 390 Center Console fish boat is right sized for proper wave spanning (bridging the waves). She has a deep vee hull shape with a 22.5 degree deadrise at her transom and a sharp hull entry up front. This is not a stepped hull. She runs a traditional deep vee bottom shape for her good performance, even at low planning speeds. While a hull step may increase top speed numbers, this hull gives good speed with equally good cruising ability.

She is fast. Think 70 MPH type speeds with four outboards. 1,200 Horsepower in a seven ton performance boat with the right hull shape makes for a Go-Fast boat. Use a lesser number of outboard engines if you do not need such a Go-Fast. Boats have been powered with both twin and triple engines.

Rod storage in the console, leaning post seat back, the rocket launcher, and below deck inside the rod lockers allows for a fisherman to carry up to forty fishing rods. That is almost over-kill on rod storage for some. Others want their choice of equipment onboard every day they go fishing. This see Vee center console allows for that desire.

The really knock-your-socks-off fishing feature in this boat is its hull side door that rethinks how easy it can be to land a fish. No gaff is needed! This is a fishing feature that needs to be fully explored to see how it makes your fishing experience better. Use your helm and outboard power to get your catch onboard. The door opens alongside the boat’s hull to forward rather than down in the water to enable a fisherman to do this new trick.

The See Vee 390 center console is a 39’0” by 11’ boat that weighs approximately 7 tons with four outboards on her transom. She has standard tankage for 570 gallons of fuel. It is a four cam, port fuel injection, turbocharged, 9 liter, 6,500 rpm redlined marine engine that comes with a warranty. Special exhaust tuning and electronics keep turbo lag out of the picture. She gives reduced time-to-plane acceleration and continuing push you back into your seat back punch all the way to a boat’s  top speed.

The engine has a bore of 4.57 inches with a stroke of 4.21 inches for a displacement of 552 cubic inches or 9 liters. The full throttle operating rpm is 6000 to 6500 rpm. It has a sequential fuel injection system.  With the multiple turbo set-up the compression ratio is 7.8 to 1. She meets with EPA and CARB emissions requirements for 50 state boating enjoyments.

This engine is so strong that Merc Racing had to invent new propellers to handle the power. The entire driveline and its dry sump M8 surface style stern drive have also been strengthened.

MTI came out with a 48 foot long with a 10’ 6” beam catamaran that matched up perfectly with two of these engines. It was displayed at the most recent Miami Boat Show and wowed the Very High Hi Performance crowd attending that show. Twin gas fueled engines was the popular way to power many of the Go Fast boats this year.

Here is a family boat that is the answer to the tale of pleasing two performance boating goals. One or more of the family goes after a thrill pleasing boat. The other one or group want comfortable seating, a place to catch some sun, easy cockpit entrance from a float or pier, and a roomy, feature-filled cockpit. This second want is just as much a performance boat goal as top speed or turning ability.

The 2012 Chaparral 226 easily does speeds in the 53-55 MPH range when you put the throttle down on a Mercury Marine Mercruiser 300 horsepower marine engine.  This is a marine chevy engine based Mercury engine coupled to either a Mercury Marine Alpha stern drive or a Mercury Marine Bravo I out drive. Go with an Alpha drive if real smooth shifting is not that important to you and you know you will not be jumping a lot of wakes, trying to fly the boat. It is a faster top speed I/O and a cheaper power package to purchase. A Bravo I will bring more money back upon resale, but this boat really satisfies so that may be a long time away.

Well designed and correctly powered for a runabout boat, she gives an excellent all-day cruising fuel economy in the 2,500 rpm (20-22 MPH) to 3,000 rpm (26-28 MPH) range. Move up to 4,000 rpms (right at say, 40 MPH) and gas mileage suffers. I like the feel of the boat responding to the drive trim by lighting up and adding more speed to the boat without adding more gas.

Chaparral fashions a different bow shape at the deck line to give a roomier than most bow and main cockpit interior. The walk thru makes boarding this boat easy. And seabuddy gives Chaparral supplied photos showing the adjustable sun lounge positions of the padded aft area.

Audi and VW make an approx. 350 horsepower marine diesel engine. In a joint marketing agreement, Mercury Marine sells that engine packaged with a transmission (inboard or vee drive) or a stern drive (I/O). This is a sophisticated engine that can be found in some Audi A8 and 7 cars on the road.

It’s a high torque engine for good acceleration and low time to plane times for boats. This engine uses a 3.27 bore with a stroke of 3.76 inches. Using a 90 degree V-8 it is a Turbo-charged, Direct Injection (TDI) design, the guts of the marine Audi diesel engine is made in Gyor, Hungary by Audi . The crankshaft features 4 bolts to hold it in place (4 bolt main). The piston’s connecting rods are fracture split. Mahle aluminum pistons are used. The heads are also aluminum and of a 4 valve design. It’s properly called a common rail engine. Like seabuddy said, it is a sophisticated engine.

These engines offer the best of automotive-like quality and durability that a German engine maker brings to the marine marketplace. This is up-to-the-minute diesel expertise for a low or no smoke exhaust. It gives excellent milage.

Mercury Marine digital throttle and shift (DTS), Sea Core, and Axius systems are all available with this 252 cubic inch displacement (4.2 L) marine diesel engine. That 350 Hp. that this engine is rated at is more horsepower from a smaller displacement engine than the popular V-6 gas engine that both Volvo Penta and Mercury Marine offer. That is a milestone in seabuddy’s opinion.

Look for the lightest, newest, marine torque big block Mercury Four Stroke outboard in a small package that is on today’s outboard motor boating marketplace at the Baltimore Boat Show. It has shown to have very high durability partly because of its robust part choices where other outboard motors have had trouble. This outboard has almost 10,000 hours of engineer’s time and testing in the field to make a durable marine engine.

A goal of the motor was for it to weight within the weight of a battery and a two stroke outboard combined together and yet have the most displacement cubic inches for marine power in its Hp class. The Mercury Marine FourStroke 150 Hp accomplishes both goals. It weights around 455 lbs. while Honda’s engine weights around 478 lbs. for its 150 Hp.

On the water, expect less vibration because of the powerhead mounts and location. The transom brackets are heavier, too. It’s a good salt or brackish water engine, too, because of a new bonding paint system that is 18 steps in all and the engine has waterproof connectors and an electric system within the cowling that is sealed away more from water than most. She has a fresh water flushing that works at idle engine speeds and also when it is turned off.

Maintenance is once a year (every 100 hours) and every three years (every 300 hours) simple thing to do. On the Chesapeake Bay it is suggested that you apply anti-seize compound on the spark plug threads each year, for instance.

Mercury Marine covers the entire engine with a 3 year non-declining warranty backed by the factory.

This 1,720 lb. engine requires a Merc Racing’s dry-sump M8 stern drive which uses a integral Merc Racing dry-sump Hydraulic transmission. Expensive stuff, these M8 out drive pieces, but they are built to take the torque of this engine.
