WineFest Coming to St. Michaels April 27 and 28, 2013

The fourth big annual charity event, WineFest at St. Michaels, will be held within the town of St. Michaels, Maryland on the eastern shore, Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28, 2013 from 12 pm to 6 pm.   This popular festival is a full streetscape event held throughout town.  Most businesses will offer wine tastings, great food, retail specials, and much more.  Wine fans will experience hundreds of highly rated US, International, national, and Maryland wines.  Each wine venue will retail sell its wine at special WineFest discount pricing.  In addition, two VIP tasting venues will be available for tasting premium wines often not available in Maryland.  One VIP venue will be on the Patriot Cruise Boat (look for seabuddy here) while cruising the Miles River and the other will be in the courtyard of the Old Brick Inn.  An excellent place to stay!

All attendees will be able to “walk St. Michaels” using their WineFest map as their guide or take shuttle busses provided by WineFest.   Regional food specialties, artisans, renowned jazz musicians, and even historical characters from the colonial days of St Michaels will be participating in the event.

To commemorate this year’s 200th anniversary of the British attack on the town of St. Michaels during the War of 1812, WineFest will include an “historic” dimension with “colonists” who will set up camp in town to show off crafts and life during the 19th century.  They will no doubt do their best to bring the history of St Michaels to life! For those who love beer, award-winning craft beers will be offered at St. Michael’s own Eastern Shore Brewing.

Art lovers will enjoy art displays based on the “wine” theme from Eastern Shore artists known as “The Six Views.”  And, last but not least, there will be a special WineFest Finale on Sunday afternoon at Town Dock Restaurant.  A new, fun event. This FINALE is appropriately named “Jazzfest Comes To Winefest.”

This mini-event will give our WineFest visitors a taste for the fall JazzFest at St Michaels (October 12 to 14, 2013).  The jazz artists for “Jazzfest comes to Winefest” are: Joanna Pascale and the FAB Trio; MARS 4tet; and Juanita Williams with the Fred Hughes Trio.  What a show it will be!

Be sure to check our website www.winefestatstmichaels.com frequently for updates as the 2013 list of wines and other events unfold.  Tickets are available for purchase at localwineevents.com.  For more info contact at winefeststmichaels@gmail.com or call 410-745-5559.

Seventh report, Sunnyland ACBS Antique and Classic Boat Show, Tavares, Florida, Chris Craft Cobra

One of the most recognizable “wow” boats ever offered for sale is the Cobra by Chris Craft. Chris Craft made this one model its image boat in the mid-1950s.

The tail fin makes this Chris Craft classic Cobra boat model

Ever since Chris Craft figured out how to make money in a nation-wide depression economy every year since 1936, they then wanted to be THE boat builder for every man, woman, and family in the world. In a very wide mix of boat models, one boat model was selected to lead in its lust factor.

The profit from other models would cover whatever this one would cost. This one was the one that should turn heads on the water or at a boat show. Women remembered it. Kids stopped in their tracks when they saw one and talked about it. Men wanted it.

fully restored and a real "looker"

For the underwater hull shape, Chris Craft used the same naval architectural lines of one of their existing boat models as the running surface.  They had already sold 503 of those hulls.

note the alligator texture touches in the cockpit

To that underwater running surface they crafted a sleek, stretched, curvy bright finished planked mahogany boat that started at the bow as high, wide, and bold and then  tapered aft to nothing. Next, Chris Craft took out the back seat. Then they added a “Chris Craft” gold fin. Finally, they added alligator upholstery touches. Like seabuddy said, it is a “wow” design themed boat.

Just look at the finish of this boat, top shelf, in seabuddy's book

She was a 20’, 10” boat with only one seat, so naturally they put a big, loud, and bold 200 horsepower Hemi Chrysler in most of them. A few Chris Craft Cobras topped that engine with an even more powerful 285 horsepower Cadillac Crusader from Detroit car dealer Cal Connell. Only ten of the 55-56 boats built had Chris Craft six cylinder engines in them.

Figure on 45-50 MPH speeds out of a Hemi powered boat. Add another five MPH for boats powered with the dual four barrel Cadillac 285 engine.

Classic Chris Craft modified wood raceboat from Lake Dora, Mount Dora, Tavares Antique and Classic Boat Show 5th report

Sleeper is an antique and classic planked mahogany wooden runabout that has been modified into a race boat by Harold Bauer. She has a 1955 to 1966 racing career over which she was regional high points champion 4 times. This is a boat that raced against Curt Brayer and his Dancing Bear and Forest Johnson and his Prowlers in the F Service Runabout class.

unrestored Chris Craft twin cockpit wood boat modified for racing years ago

She is a hard riding, porpoising, but fast race boat. While top speeds were over 70 MPH, her crew reported peeing blood after a race. Powered by a 95 horsepower straight shaft inboard by Chris Craft when she was built in 1931, she was re-powered as a racing boat Chris Craft. First Buick, then 390 Ford engines got the boat’s speed up. These engines were moved aft within the hull, a Casalle V-drive installed with a jack shaft to a Borg Warner transmission, a Cary two blade propeller selected, and the two cockpits relocated into forward dual cockpits with bucket seats for both the driver and the riding mechanic, a fuel tank was located under the fore deck, and the hull was fiberglassed. So seabuddy labels her both a wood and a fiberglass antique and classic boat.

Note how much wider she is at the chines, which was an owner addition for racing

The boat also had her structure strengthened with extra bracing, while her chines were really widened (see seabuddy’s photo), and a cavitation plate was added for stability and control. This Chris Craft racing runabout is not a Chris Craft Racing Runabout model, she was a standard production pleasure boat modified by her owner.

Baltimore Car Show this weekend!

2013 Buick Regal test drive

seabuddy driving a Buick Regal at the Baltimore Auto Show

Seabuddy drove a 2013 Buick Regal at the car show, and you can too! Lots of cars, trucks, and SUVs are ready for you within this program. They want to get you behind the wheel and on the streets of Baltimore to try the latest cars at this auto show. It’s free, and no sales pitch. Your car escort is not allowed to sell. They may just answer your questions. They are not car dealers. They know their cars and can answer many questions that would stump a dealer about the cars. In fact, they are refreshing in their candor. Now, back to the Buick I drove. It has a gauge (as you cannot feel the action) that tells you when the gas engine is off and the A/C, lights, and radio is running off an extra battery at a stoplight. Then, when you step on the gas, the gauge shows the gas engine starting again. Think along the ways a golf cart works, but smooth and silent. Try it for yourself at the car show.

Sea Ray Sundancer no longer

new 510 sea ray sundancer sunroom 2013

climate controlled extra inside cabin with roof, back sliding doors, and hard glass sides

It is to be a Sea Ray “SkyFlow Design (Sundancer). “SkyFlow Design dissolves the line between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing natural light into the boat like never before. Galley and salon connect with the enclosed cockpit beneath a long stretch of glass. Interiors are brightly lit and indoor dimensions see noticeable gains” now. Sea Ray Sundancers or sea ray Dancers are to be replaced a model at a time,  in 2013, 2014, and 2015. What used to be called a Sundancer s going to through a design change which drives the name change. The first size is a WINNER! Named the 510 Skyflow Design Sundancer, she is 50’ 10” with a beam of 14’ 8”. Fuel is 400 gallons of diesel, water is 110 gallons and waste is 60 gallons. One should expect a 22 ton sport yacht weight.

downstairs main cabin 2013 sea ray sundancer 51 foot

main cabin 51 foot sea ray sundancer sunroom 2013 model it is very airy

She is a 30 knot boat without the weight of gear, bedding, and cruising supplies onboard. The Sea Ray Sundancer or soon to be known as the 510 Sea Ray Skyflow Sundancer burns a lot of fuel (40 gallon an hour) with her cruising speed (similarly loaded as above) at 22 knots and 2,500 rpm. WOT throttle fuel burn is around 65 GPH at the 30 knots. Why the poor fuel mileage? These boats are coming down the line mostly as v-drive boats, not Mercury Zeus. Zeus pod drives parts and service is still not being talked about since the CMM dissolve ( the company that made them, trained the service staff for them, wrote the specs, warehoused,  etc.. for Sea Ray).  So order a boat only after you check out all the facts for yourself. Seabuddy does not have the answers and I cannot get hard facts out of my buddies at Sea Ray for you for now. Check out for yourself the Cummins, mercury Marine dissolve joint venture write-up.

Why Zeus? Number one is joystick. All engine and boat brands ordered with Joystick eliminate customer’s concerns about handling and docking. Joystick came to boats in 2006. Now seven years later there are a half dozen joystick systems and they are taking over the world of easy to handle/docking boating. Zeus also promoted 30% better fuel economy, 15% higher cruising speeds and all the leading edge value of a mega yacht style pod drive system, bigger interior owner’s aft cabin that is more generous within this given size hull. Get a in-stock Zeus, a ZF pod drive or a Volvo-Penta IPS system if you want this stuff. I love it. Systems are now made for outboards as well as inboards today.

What size Sea Ray Sundancer will be discontinued for a new Sea Ray Skyflow Sundancer in July as 2014 model? Seabuddy thinks the 340 Sundancer should be next. Look for a 340 Sea Ray Skyflow Sundancer at the Newport R. I. boat show in the late summer-early fall. Then the 410 Sundancer should be expected to be officially dropped for a replacement 410 Skyflow Sundancer in time for the 2013 Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show. Expect the Sea Ray Skyflow Sundancer name to very slowly replace the Sea Ray Sundancer and will  take several years. After all, the name Sea Ray Sundancer has been around since 1974.

F Service Runabout, Curt Brayer, and Dancing Bear

Curt designed, built, drove, and turned the wrenches on his Wood Race Boat, Dancing Bear. He designed and built this racer over a two year period along the banks of the Miami River while he was the sales Manager at the Merrill-Stevens Yacht Company.

racing boat f service runabout

Record Holder F Service Runabout

Curt came to Florida in 1963 after racing his boat, The Violator, in Buffalo, NY, earlier in the 1950-1960s time frame with time out for military service for the Berlin Crisis. He also has spent time in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Before boat racing, Curt raced Stock Cars and Motorcycles for years. Quite the mechanic, Curt likes tuning multiple carbs. Dancing Bear has six Strombergs on a log-type manifold on a 1957 392 cubic inch Hemi. In the theme of F Service Runabout class rules the engine is under 400 inches in displacement and $1,500 cost in cost.

My photos were taken at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York during the Race Boat Regatta that is held every other year in August. Curt seems to be at the  Vintage Boat Racing effort on the St. Lawrence River in the N Y  side of the Thousand Islands area all the time.

I really love the either long wood covered or the padded vinyl uncovered front bench seat set-up in front of the main/driver’s cockpit. Sitting behind your guests while driving  is the right idea in my book. Let them have to turn around and twist their necks to hold a conversation!

Joy Stick Piloting for 2,3,4 outboards

New product for 2013. It allows for the boater to control or move any tow, three, or four big engine outboard powered boat in any direction via the joystick. It allows for no stress in docking and maneuvering around the marina and in other tight areas, all when it is less than ideal for wind, current, or traffic conditions.

Think easy boat handling while being more quiet within the cockpit. It offers better control than bow or stern thrusters. This is proportional steering and throttle control in one fingertip. It includes Smart Craft digital throttle and shift (DTS) with electra – hydraulic steering. This is an all Mercury made system. And it is baked by the full single source Mercury warranty.

With a joy stick equipped boat, a boat owner can move his craft sideways or at any angle. Make the boat rotate on its own axis with a twist of the joy stick.

Speed up the power to fight for perfect control in special conditions, like a windy day. It is proportional control of thrust and speed. It includes an enhanced docking mode. It allows for long low speeds within no-wake harbors. It is packaged with Smart Craft and DTS (digital throttle and shift).

Joystick Piloting for outboards mates to either 250 HP or 300 HP Verado engines by Mercury Marine.

Expect to see boats in the water and ready for a sea trial test ride at the 2013 Miami Boat Show. More info here… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWOuwktmDlI

High Horsepower Electric Outboard from Torqueedo

Look for this as new product and installed on at least four boats at the 2013 Miami Boat Show.

Think 30 MPH plus in a boat powered with an electric outboard. The easy goal is a one hour battery life per charge at that kind of speed and a four hour cruising life at, say, half power. It is a package, motor, battery, cabling, display, and throttle. They are all in an integrated system with an management set-up and a touch-screen display.

Torqueedo are the folks that bring you the small electric 15 lbs. motor, battery, and throttle. Plus other electric engine models that are like 1.5 to 3 horsepower gas powered outboards but as electric using/no gas outboards. These small motors are sold by West Marine and others are quick mount engines and some are able to be dismantled for storage and transportation. They also offer equivalent electric motors in the 5 horsepower and 8 horsepower sizes. These engines tend to weight about 40 lbs. These require either one or two Torqueedo batteries to make the right package for your boat. And some of these models can take Torqueedo’s new 1 and ¼ lbs. solar panel.

Torqueedo products are made in Germany, with unique North American, Great Britain / Ireland, France, Spain / Portugal, and other countries business / service centers.

At least for 2013, the 80 horsepower type motor package, named, Deep Blue, will only be available as an installed power package from selected boat builders.
