…Marine propulsion systems manufacturer Cummins Mer Cruiser Diesel and Volkswagen have announced a long-term alliance to co-develop marine engines below 5 Liters that will be marketed, distributed and serviced under the CMD brand.

Key to the alliance is the planned joint development of marine engines below 5 Liters that will comply with future emissions standards. Volkswagen, a leading manufacturer of diesel marine engines up to 350 hp (258 kW), will manufacture the new engine line at its plant in Salzgitter, Germany. Additionally, effective January 1, 2011, all current Volkswagen marine engines will be sold exclusively by CMD and marketed under the CMD brand.

The EPA Tier 3 emissions standard will take effect in 2012 in the United States, and the RCD2 emissions standard takes effect in 2014 in Europe for this range of engines. The new standards prescribe significantly lower thresholds for emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other pollutants and require the development of next-generation diesel combustion technology.

Powered with Volvo’s revolutionary Inboard Propulsion System (IPS) the 400 is one of the first models of any boat manufacturer to be designed around Volvo’s IPS propulsion system. A  range of over 350 miles at a cruising speed as low as 26 mph or as high as 35 mph shows how a sport yacht can be designed to get all the extra performance from the Volvo IPS that it offers to a boater. Top speed for the yacht is over 41 mph with the IPS also.

This Lyman is often considered the top example of a wood classic open cruiser. At 26’ 2” with a 9’ 1’ beam and a deep cockpit she is a strong candidate for very large Bay or Great Lake boating. Peter brought his self-restored Classic wood boat Century boat Resorter up from Fl and took two top awards at the recent Chesapeake Bay Chapter – ACBS 11 acre Boat festival in St. Michaels, MD.

His Resorter is powered with a gas Norberg engine. This is a rare combination, as the Cal Connell “Crusader” Cadillac 331 cu. in. engine was coming to market via Century Boats in both Coronado and Resorter Century Boat models and it was a lighter weight engine so it delivered speeds of 60 mph in a prototype Resorter (these Cal Connell modified  gas Cadillac engines powered similar cut- down family boat designs to over 67 mph in race conditions).
