A new Bertram 31 built in Italy, at first, is the news for the re-opening of this valued brand.
The new business owner is a boater and has a proven track record of investing in boat building and storied brand names in the marine industry. He is a fan of this brand, a great hardcore saltwater sportfishing machine. Benjarnino Gavio has owned a 54 Bertram, personally. The new 31 might be offered in both an open runabout design and fly bridge models.
The Bertram Yachts plant parking lot is filled with weeds now. It was Sea Ray’s plant earlier in its life. Seabuddy had a plant tour back when it was building Sea Ray’s. It is not a part of the new Bertram deal. That plant is going to Merritt Island Boat Works. A replacement boat building factory for Bertram Yachts is. A USA plant, most likely in Florida, Georgia, or North/ South Carolina is in the current search program.
The second model to be made is currently scheduled to be either the 25 or the 28 foot hull sizes. The 25’ boat was made in Italy before by Riva (with some Riva styling touches) in the 1970s. Riva also made the Bertram 20 Bahia Mar model. BTW, the Riva Windshield is outstanding with the lines of this Bertram model, as is all of their hardware on the Bertram boat that they built in this length.
Seabuddy spent a fair amount of time aboard a Bertram 28 just off the Pacific ocean California coast. She was powered by straight shaft Mercury Marine 260 engines. They provided just enough, but not any excess power and speed. The fly bridge was not to my taste based on its seating and how the skipper had to handle to the controls. They seemed to be misplaced in relation to the seating bases and not enough room for my guests. Thus, operating the boat was tiring for me. It is possible that a 36’ and a 46.6” Bertram will be re-born also, but at a later date.
The new owner of Bertram also owns the Baglietto shipyard in Italy. He, Beniamino Gavio, made a big investment in that yacht yard. He is quoted as saying “You can trust that I will treat Bertram with great, great, great respect — the same as I’m doing with Baglietto.” Note, he owns other businesses and the boating companies seem to be something he wants to get deeply involved with.

The very first model will be a 37’ sport boat This boat will be introduced late in 2015. It will be named the AM37 and the Aston Martin name and logo will be on the boat.
Quick facts- there are some heavy hitters in the boat business in bring this boat to market. Henk de Vries, Director of Feadship is on board. As is Mulder Yacht Design. See Mulder’s 76 MPH yacht Moonraker.
And do not forget Aston Martin.

Aston Martin is a 103 year old car company that won Le Mans outright with Carroll Shelby in 1959.
And they won their GT 1 class in 2007.
They are a small car company, but they have $312 million in new funds to expand from investors. The investors and management want to company to expand, particularly with its influence with women. There are naming deals for Sunglasses and Travel Accessories.
Aston will get future engines and electronics from Mercedes Benz. Mercedes may have Aston Martin make their very limited production Mayback models, as it is believed that Aston is better suited for limited production, than a big company like M B..
There is talk of an Alabama Aston Martin plant, near the Mercedes one.
The AM37 will be made in the UK is seabuddy’s current understanding, but not inside the Aston Martin Gaydon, Warwickshire UK headquarters.
Engines will be gas of diesel. Currently the thought is to power the gas engine closed deck sport cuddy cabin boats for a 60 MPH WOT top speed and the Diesels for a 50 MPH top speed. So, they are not Go-Fast boats. Rather, think Riva Aquarama, undated to today’s technology.
One more thing, look at that powered hard surface three piece cockpit cover!
Miss Loren had her own wooden Riva speedboat. She picked the top-shelf twin engine model. While she won a Best Actress Oscar for her role in the movie Two Women in 1962, seabuddy remembers her first for being in Houseboat with Cary Grant in 1958. I have her described as “adorably charning” in this film and those words do it for me.
The 1960 film It Started in Naples with Clark Gable seems to bring out another side of her acting skill while still being unsophisticated and lovable. Please also recall her dance number called “Americano” in this film. Others are Arabesque with Gregory Peck, El Cid with Charlton Heston, The Fall Of The Roman Empire with Stephen Boyd, Christopher Plummer, an Alec Guiness, and Man Of La Mancha with Peter O’ Toole.. She did numerous other films, too.
The newest model Riva model came out in 1963. The hull was a development of Carlo Riva’s Triton model. All Aquaramas were wood boats but only the first three boats were planked wood boats.
Laminated (or plywood) hull sides were then used for the balance of the production run of these boats. These sheets were different from what was being used by higher volume (and lower priced) production boat builders. Each hull side was molded as one full length, top to bottom, bow to stern, single piece. And that sheet of plywood was molded off the boat to the same sweep as the designed hull’s curve. It is a treat to see these panels ready to be installed on a boat.
There at least four minor hull side, bottom shapes and length changes over the years of the boat’s production run.
A Riva is also a work of art in many aspects. Start with a look at the hardware. Study the windshield. The grace in the shape of the control handles. The dash panel.
A Riva boat can take one’s breath away if one really looks at it closely and in detail. A Riva looks like a handcrafted, one-off boat, but it is a production boat. A limited production boat that stands close up inspection as one would do with a custom boat.
Riva Yachts hand selected its lumber. They then seasoned all of that lumber that went into the boats themselves, and then they decided when it was ready for boat building. All that wood was held together with screws, glue, and then bright finished. Almost all of a boat was sprayed several times and then hand brushed several more times to a high gloss polished varnish finish. Windshield glass, screws, the metal for the boat’s hardware, and much of the material used in the seating was out sourced from other counties. Engines came from the USA. The varnish used in the finish of their classic boats was Italian.
A great book on the company’s history, the boat models, and boat owners of Riva Boats is Riva by Roberto Franzoni. It is a hardcover book that is printed in several languages within each copy. Like these classic wood boats, this book is rare. It is now an out-of-print book. Search for a collector copy at books within Amazon.com.

$52 million was a recent sale price for a certain model classic Ferrari. That is an approximant 50% increase in sales price for that model Ferrari since another one sold roughly six months ago. How much did your classic boat go up in price?
Seabuddy chose boating and classic boating when I was about 14 years old. I could drive a boat on Barnegat Bay, but not a car on the roads of NJ. Being able to drive something with a motor made up my mind. By the way, I never have said I am smart.
Is your Riva model selling for more than say, $750,000 this year? Your rarest model Chris Craft (they made 4 of this one over the two years of 1929 and 1930) for $250,000? Your wood Century Arabian selling for more than $75,000?
Note, even a Glasspar G-2 sports car has only gone up about 250% since 2006. A Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz went up about 3 and a 1/2 times. Do not ask Seabuddy about 1967 Corvettes.
By the way, Mr. Ferrari could only sell 36 of this model Ferrari when it was new.
Here is a side story. Rumor has it that Bob Bondurant sold his Cobra Daytona coupe to fund the start of his high performance driving school. Anyway, his racer Daytona Cobra Coupe recently sold for $8.5 million. Just think. If he had just waxed that car, rather working daily at showing movie stars and rich folks how to drive fast and safe in the hot Arizona sun for all these years, HE WOULD HAVE MORE MONEY.
This runabout is so very much original and, in addition, it holds a special place in history that she is a major marker in Riva Boats history in the USA. Made by Riva in Italy, she was displayed in the New York Riva Showroom to example the luxury of Riva boats to all of the tourists that visit Manhattan. Please take your time in looking at her today.
She is a classic wood straight shaft inboard runabout with its engine in the center of the cockpit. This model features the special design ideas of the Riva boat building company for water sports. The Riva slogan for her was ”It’s the young people’s rocket” She is fast, maneuverable, with easy cockpit access, and a special sunning bed. Riva sold examples of these 18.5 ‘boats to Elizabeth Taylor, Peter Seller, and Bridget Bardot.
This boat has had its Riva-Crusader V-8 engine rebuilt as part of her restoration. Other interior parts that needed freshening were replaced with what is properly titled “New, Old Stock” pieces. Seabuddy has seen and heard her run and she quietly fills my expectations for Riva luxury in a fast sport boat.
She makes a major statement in person. Her wood is spectacular. The unique cockpit sun bed takes one’s mind off mundane things and off to dreaming about lovely Italian women, Champaign, and some decadent Pate.
This 15th built boat represents the Riva Junior model line that was made from 1966 to 1972. Riva made 626 examples of this model in those years. She has had two owners in her history and shows rather low hours for 50 plus year old boat.
Baglietto Ship Yard; new 30 knot, 144 foot Aluminum Monokini mega yacht w/ fold down balconies, Monaco boat show
Using all of her 7,200 horsepower, Monokini is a fast mega-yacht with her top is 34.5 MPH. This 44-meter yacht uses an aluminum hull and deckhouse with all of her naval architecture and engineering done in-house by Baglietto. The yacht’s styling was done by designer Alberto Mancini.
Baglietto was founded in 1854 in Varazze, Italy near Genoa. The first two memorable boats were the 1906 boat for Pope Leo XIII at 74’ in length (Giuseppina), and the 44’ motorboat for Giacomo Pucini, the composer of Madame Butterfly, in 1911 (Cio—Cio-San). The yard also built airships, seaplanes and naval vessels. One of their planes/pilots held the world’s altitude record at one time.
Both powerboats and sailboats from the yard did well in competition also. The powerboat competition hull shape was developed into an effective anti-submarine naval craft. A Baglietto MAS (Motoscafo Armato Silurante or Italian for: “Torpedo Armed Motorboat”) was the desired craft for several governments and other shipyards were asked to build to the MAS Baglietto plans and specs when the need for more boats exceeded the yard’s capacity.
By the 1950s, Baglietto directed itself to wood pleasure boat yacht building. First they built planked wooden yachts and then they switched to marine plywood constructed wood yachts, much the same path as fellow Italian boat builder Riva followed. Their production series of yachts were introduced at this time. Four sizes were offered. The smallest was the 37’, followed by the 45’, 65’ and finally the 72’. These boats were sold world-wide and seabuddy understands that one size had a multi-year run of something like 43 units. By 1975 aluminum yacht construction replaced wood boat building at Balietto.
Monokini is the name of the newest Baglietto mega yacht. But, she is not the largest at 144’. That title goes to a mega yacht that measured 190’. Monokini will be at the Monaco boat show, although she is a SOLD boat.
Wood Rivas seem to seabuddy to reflect Italian passion, smart boat building, and a vision about what a good boat should be. They reflect timeless design, imaginative colors, and top shelf material choices. They are also expensive boats. Usually they ask and bring more money than other production boats. There was one paper of one for sale for $149,500 from a very well respected broker. That one boat-for-sale listing was for a 22’ wooden runabout boat. She was said to have a 220 horsepower 327 Chevy/Crusader/Riva engine. It was an example of the most desirable model of the Riva Ariston series. It was also offered as a well-maintained craft.
Is it worth it? Who knows? Boats are not basics like potatoes. No pleasure boat is. My boat is my hobby. And I do not have the coin in my jeans for a top shelf boat that is a classic wood Riva power boat.
A Riva is also a work of art in many aspects. Look at the hardware. Inspect the windshield. The grace in the shape of the control handles. Look at the fitment of wood if the engine room is open. Study the use of plywood and timber wood through-out the boat. A Riva boat can take one’s breath away if one really looks at it closely and in detail. A Riva looks like a handcrafted, one-off boat, but it is a production boat. A limited production boat that stands close inspect up to the standard of a custom boat is a show stopper.

We are having a great discussion with some expert classic wooden Riva fans, restorers, and current/past owners of the brand via email. I am a fan, the others are, too. I may be right or wrong in a post here at www.seabuddyonboats.com, but I try for the truth in discussing boats. They are a long time love.
In one of my articles on Riva wood boats, I posted some photos and that started our current discussion. I enjoy such opportunities to learn and talk about boats. Everyone has a voice and input to the base of knowledge about classic Riva boats.
So, this is the wood boat. These are some additional Riva boat photo images taken by me on the same day of the same boat. Plus, here is a link back to the other write-up and pictures of the same Classic Wood Riva Boat taken the same day as these were.
Some boat model name choices are Tritone, Ariston, Super Ariston, Aquarama, Super Aquarama, and Long Super Aquarama. These are single and twin engine boat models and perhaps the first point would be to decide if this classic has one or two engines. Next think about the hatches on the rear deck as they I.D. some models. Next, look at the dashboard where some script and gauges and the throttle/shift information is mounted around the steering wheel. Then the raised toe rail at the outside edge of the foredeck and the presence of a siren are clues.
This is not a contest. It is a desire to correctly name this classic wood Riva boat model.

I have heard from an impectable source that the boat is a 1966 Riva Super. She is unusal in that she has hatches on her aft deck, not the main stream for this model, sun lounge pad that Ted Kennedy once made infamous. Power is twin 427 engines.

An Ariston and the Super Ariston are the single engine style of the Riva Aquarama classic wood boat. These runabout boats are considered the top classic mahogany, cedar, and oak wood boats that used only the best wood, hardware, glass, and marine parts from Italy, France, Switzerland, England, Belgium and other countries to give a wooden boat owner simply the best product that the Riva Factory could build.
Riva Yachts selected its lumber by hand. They seasoned that lumber that went into the boats themselves; they decided when it was ready for boat building, where on the boat it had its best use, and how it was to be used with screws, glue, and then finished. Almost all of a boat was sprayed several time and then hand brushed several more times to a high gloss polished varnish bright finish. Some interior boards were called out on every model for a paint finish, however, and lesser quality wood was used there. Think about areas like the seat frames, under the bow, side, and aft decks for a painted finish.
Windshield glass, screws, the metal for the boat’s hardware, and much of the material used in the seating was out sourced from other counties. Engines came from the USA. The varnish used in the finish of their classic boats was Italian.
