Four Winns Group Beneteau set to take Miami Boat Show by storm

43’ 6” New cruiser/ bow rider with a 13’ 4” beam.

Four Winns says “opening up the bow, this new boat will satisfy the most discerning customer looking for the perfect boat to entertain family and friends.

“We challenged the design team to look at a typical 43’ cruiser style boat and find a way to create more useful space,” stated Christophe Lavigne, vice-president of Engineering and Design for Rec Boat Holdings. “The front of the boat, with limited useful space above deck, became the obvious target for innovation. The result is the open bow concept that does not sacrifice the living space below deck,” Lavigne said.

You must start in the bow on the Horizon 440, its most unique feature. Large enough to hold your kid’s soccer team, the bow is packed with storage, built-in cooler, plenty of seating including extra-long lounges and a hydraulic table that rises from the floor, eliminating the need for storage. For the sunny afternoons, an optional sun shade provides protection while island hopping through the Bahamas. A JL Audio 5-speaker sound system provides the perfect party lounge. The cockpit of the Horizon 440 is patterned after the legendary Vista series from Four Winns providing plenty of room to move around and entertain. The rear, U-shaped seating area delivers plenty of seating room and entertaining is a breeze with the full refreshment center housing a refrigerator, icemaker and sink. Optional cockpit air conditioning is available for the warmer climates. The captain of the new

Horizon 440 is well equipped with IPS controls, double-wide companion helm seating with electric, 6-way adjustment for the driver. The aft area of the boat is a true outdoor living room, with a grill, sun lounger and large swim platform.

When your family is ready to stop for the night, move down below to a very cruiser-esque cabin area featuring a full size head with separate shower, open galley area and comfortable sofa with 40” TV. You can bring all your friends along with plenty of sleeping room featuring a queen size bed, aft cabin and forward berth.

The Horizon 440 bow cruiser is powered with Volvo Penta IPS twin 500 or 600 horsepower.

Chris Craft Center Console for 2015

Triple outboards from either Mercury Marine or Yamaha are on the newest Chris Craft sport boat.. This new 2015 Chris Craft runabout.is their entry into the currently hot and  popular 34’ center console.

It has a fairly popular beam of 10’ 10” for this length; joining Regulator, Everglades, Southport, as well as Boston Whaler by being within 2” of them in its beam. But the very strong seller, Grady White boat is ¾ of a foot wider in beam. You will “feel” that difference on the water.

One may want to explore a much narrower (up to two to three feet narrower) of a high speed center console design (the 39’ 6” Cigarette has a beam of just 8’) for more boat speed. Seabuddy does not have any speed numbers yet for the Chris Craft 34’, but it should be in the mid-50s. Note, however, that some of the GO-FAST center console boats test out at up to 80 mph.

The only unit of this boat available, for the time being, is offered by Grande Yachts International, a major Chris Craft dealer. Seabuddy shows their boat in the water in a photo in this posting. This boat is powered by the three Mercury Marine outboards choice. Full production of this model is planned to hit the Chris Craft dealer network in spring, 2015.

While this new fish boat has special features to make it very easy to fish out of; the styling, fit, finish, and “stylish look” is pure Chris Craft. Chris Craft runabouts are designed, engineered and built in Sarasota, Florida.  Chris-Craft says it has captivated those of us boaters with an appreciation for the finer things, with exceptional style, seaworthy functionality and attention to the smallest details.

Going on, they say… “There will is nothing traditional about the bow area of this boat compared to other Center Consoles today. The seating and sunpad conversion for sun bathing will be a simple process to convert it for whatever the occasion, boasting a double sun lounger with arm rests and drink holders.
You can expect 360 visibilities while navigating to your destination from the helm of the new 34 with ample space to manage all with the latest of a (Glass Helm) from Garmin. The true glass (not plastic) windshield offers increased visibility and provides comfort to the helm and two companion chairs against inclement weather.
Below the forward helm seating and console you will find overnighting capabilities with a nicely appointed berth and head. The use of this space is endless for the fisherman, scuba diver, and overnighter.
The cockpit provides all the accommodations for a day of fishing, with plenty of room to work your trolling rods, or a day of cruising with friends and family, with hideaway seating and the ability to convert to a complete wrap around configuration comfortable at any speed.”
Finally, Chris Craft says that the combination of power, comfort, and Chris-Craft styling in the new Catalina 34 will make this boat a “one of a kind” on the water.

Chris Craft’s newest engine 2015

stern drive gas engine chris craft 2015

Chris Craft newest engine

This one comes from Chevy/ GM like many of the classic era engines. It is a powerful engine in a Chris Craft. It acts like a big block but is within the small block family tree.

What is different with this engine? The block is aluminum, not cast iron, so it is a light weight package and comes with closed cooling, so the engine internals never touches the water that you boat in. The valve train features VVT or continuously variable valve timing (VVT). Chevy says “Athletes understand that proper breathing is critical to maintaining peak performance under all conditions, and so do Chevrolet powertrain engineers. Getting air in and exhaust gases out of the combustion chamber under all speeds [makes more power]. Chevrolet’s VVT system uses electro-hydraulic actuators between the drive sprocket and camshaft to twist the cam relative to the crankshaft position. Adjusting the cam phasing in this manner allows the valves that are actuated by that camshaft to be opened and closed earlier or later.”

Hot Rod magazine says “The beauty of VVT is that an improvement in high-rpm power doesn’t sacrifice bottom-end torque.”

Volvo marinized this Chevy V8-380 (and its sister 430 HP version) for Chris Craft. Volvo says “it is the next generation of gasoline engine performance for powerboats. Modern technology and advanced design deliver improved acceleration, impressive mid-range response, reduced fuel consumption, reduced emissions and quiet, smooth operation. All in a lighter and more durable package. This next generation engine is a perfect match for the Duoprop drive, featuring twin counter-rotating propellers.”

Opening salvo: it is about V-6 stern drive engines for 2015

“There isn’t a single GM part on this engine,” Seabuddy quotes Brett Martin, a MerCruiser manager at Mercury Marine. This engine was purpose-built for marine use and delivers Mercury’s proven performance, durability and ease of service.”. All of its parts need to come from Mercury Marine and its dealers. No pistons, rings, cranks, etc are from a GM car engine.

“We are proud to introduce the next generation of stern-drive technology with this ground-breaking new engine,” said John Pfeifer, the president of Mercury Marine. “This engine was purpose-built for marine use.”

Major components of the MerCruiser 4.5L engine include a newly designed rear-facing throttle body, a special anti-whistle throttle plate, engine cover and mounts, lightweight flywheel, fuel supply module and structural oil pan” Mercury Marine has taken the initiative to design a lightweight, high-displacement V-6 marine engine that is not dependent on automotive technology,” said Buck Pegg, from Chaparral Boats The 4.5L V-6 the engine was built with cast-iron componentry wherever the engine encounters seawater and corrosion-resistant aluminum and composites everywhere else. Digital rather than analog sensors are used throughout the engine.

It has been noted that he 4.5L can be installed in single- and twin-engine applications and it is compatible with company’s full series of Alpha and Bravo drives. Fresh design innovations such as a long runner and scrolled intake manifold as well as the higher displacement than the Chevy V-6 , which allows for an good power-to-weight ratio.

Mercruiser marine v 6 gas engine

2015 Mercury Marine new engine

This V-6 engine weighs about 130 pounds less than a 5.0L V-8 Chevy small block, yet provides similar on-the-water performance within a smaller boat. With a shorter stroke than a Chevy V-6 engine, the power comes on higher and one can prop your boat to run as much as 5,200 rpms at W.O.T.
A V-6 engine allows for a bigger cockpit by about 6-8 inches. In a small boat that will make any boat more family friendly than the bigger engine box or sun pad that a V-8 requires.

Yamaha Helm Master goes triple

package of Yamaha Helm System

Yamaha Outboard photo

34’ Center Consoles are hot marine merchandise. Up until the 2015 model year, these boats were almost exclusively powered with twin outboards. Now, warm water and warm weather based boats are being delivered with triple outboard engines. There is no question about it; triples are the hot power in that market. Twins are the way to go in all the other markets, though. Boat builders are doing what they need to their boat offerings to accommodate three engine as well as two engine new center console boats.

Yamaha Helm Master™ uses …” rigging that digitally connects an enhanced binnacle control, a high-definition LCD screen, electronic steering, an electronic ignition panel, a theft-deterrent system and an innovative joystick. Together these components form a true drive-by-wire system that responds instantly to your command.” This system is intended for boat builder installation only right now.

Typically, a designated employee at a given boat builder receives all the training and trouble-shooting knowledge that insures that the boat and power works as intended by Yamaha, as each boat model and power package is a somewhat custom installation. One hears the word “calibrated”, which to Seabuddy means that making this system work right on a boat is heavily dependent on the marine tech that installs it.

Note, your boat dealer is getting proper training before any arrival of a Yamaha Helm Master equipped boat to support local boats that are boat builder rigged. Along with dealer-level training there are many forms of support that your new boat dealer gets from the Yamaha factory.

The entire Helm Master™ system is covered by a Yamaha factory warranty for the first three years of a new boat. But, if you plan on keeping your rig, say, six years, you cannot buy extended warranty coverage. To understand what I am talking about you can buy and cover all your other Yamaha stuff under the Yamaha Extended service coverage (Y.E.S.), It is sold separately at extra cost and covers Yamaha product up to six years. That exclusion could be a worry, as most of us own their boats for longer than 3 years.

By the way, fans of Mercury Marine will be happy to hear that it offers a similar program for its outboard engines.

Bertram Yachts boats changing its lay-up

After years of success on the race courses of the world and having won numerous

fishing tournaments, Bertram is going from a traditional lay-up for its yachts to open molding infusion.

Using vacuum-assisted resin infusion for the yacht’s hull and deck as well as the small parts is their way to add top speed to their boats on the water via an all-up weight savings. Initially, their 64 fish boat will go between a knot to a knot and a half faster at WOT with the roughly 10,000 lbs. weight savings in hull number one using this lay-up change

“We were looking to increase strength with a re-engineered composite laminate design,” says Robert Ullberg, Bertram’s VP of product development and engineering. Ullberg and company president Herndon worked with Vectorworks Naval Engineering in nearby Titusville, Fla. to collaborate on infusion-optimized laminate designs. Also used was Composites Consulting Group from Texas a composites design company with the intended core supplier DIAB Group from Sweden. Bertram used a DIAB foam core, either grooved or flat, depending on the location of the core within the boat. Fiber manufacturer Vectorply Corp. in Phenix City, Ala. assisted and supplied the fiber reinforcements for the hull and deck, while Interplastic Corp. – Thermoset Resins Div. of St. Paul, Minn. consulted and supplied the resin.

The RINA and the standard “Small Craft – Hull Construction and Scantlings It is said that the RINA assumed a top speed of 46 mph at maximum boat weight in a sea state with a13-ft wave height. Wow!

One of RINA’s Rules for Classification of Pleasure Yachts were respected as well as the ISO 12215 the more interesting issues was a through look at the stress of each layer or ply of the lay-up. This issue has a great effect on the durability and smooth finish of the gelcoat over the life of the vessel.

The placement of the stringers along the hull’s length was driven by the locations of engines and tanks as well as the gyrostabilizers. The four longitudinal stringers contain a high-density foam core, covered with special fiberglass fabric. The longitudinal stringers were infused along with the hull laminate in this Bertram. This was done that the stringers would bond completely to the hull. It did require separate vacuum ports along the stringer top points for best wet out.

With the foam core and the two fiberglass skins, the hull laminate thicknesses range from 3/8-inch to 2-inches. DIAB H100 1-inch thick closed-cell foam core material was used mostly for the hull bottom, and H80 1.5-inch foam core for the hull sides. However, the deck and the flying bridge are mostly 1.25-inch cored sandwich construction. Note, the entire hull was vacuum bagged and sealed.

34’ Center Console, Triples, 75 MPH plus

center console fish boat outboard fiberglass

Popular Center Console Fish boat w/triple outboards

This is one hot boat. Triple outboard engines are the new King-of-the Hill for Center Console boats power and this is one model that is selling in numbers. This one has a stepped bottom design that gets the crew, engines, boat gear, and rigged hull on top of the water for increased speed. With less boat in the water, the faster the boat goes. Specs are 34’ by 10’.

She will do well with other power, too. Twins, triples, and if one insists, even quads. Here the three 300 horsepower Mercury Marine outboard engines have been painted to the owner’s choice of finish. That is a popular option, too.

As the boat’s best cruising speed moves up with more power, many of these triple boats are used for a fast cruise down in south Florida or for a trip to the Bahamas for lunch rather than as a pure fish boat. Within the mid-Atlantic and northern states, twins still rule. But, the HOT power in coming 2015 model year is triples. Both Mercury and Yamaha offer Joy Stick for triples, now, and that makes these boats something one can drive well around the marina with only minutes of instruction.

For a multi-purpose boat, seating and comfort features are other items that are optional to turn a fish boat into a family multi-use boat. Lounges, cup holders, head, and other welcoming items for all the family members should be thought about.

New 25’ upscale trailer-able sport boat from Austria

25 sport runabout inboard outboard

the new boat model

She features a stepped hull done by an outside hydrodynamic expert Harry Miesbauer. The top-of-the-line interior was done by Studio KISKA, who has done some of the Audi automotive interiors.

Figure on 60 MPH with the biggest 430 plus horsepower big block V-8 engine, but a 220 horsepower V-6 is also available. The intent is to satisfy both a luxury-racer customer and the an owner that wants a stylish tender for a mega yacht.

The 25 foot boat comes from Austria’s lake-based boating past. It’s a somewhat retro/ modern styled runabout that makes a statement. Think Gold Cup gentlemen’s racers from the 1920s and 1930s in the US.

Please study the shape, size, and material choices of the hardware. It is made to the German standard, which is somewhat compareable to the USA 316l specifications, which is the top marine choice. The balance of the quality of this boat stands up to similar inspection.

Not yet sold in the US, this 8’ 2” beam boat will make you will have to wait till perhaps spring – summer, 2015.

New marine fuel winter storage product

marine fuel stabilzer sta bil 360 winter storage boat

Sta Bil 360 Marine

Sta Bil 360 Marine adds new protection to your boat and its engine(s) for 2014. In many parts of the country, boaters have an off-season period. This can last four to 8 months depending on your home port. All you boaters that slip their boats in Key West, well Seabuddy is not talking about your boating fuel habits in a direct way in this write-up.

For the rest of us gas engine seasonal boat owners, let me suggest a few pointers.

Warning, I am not a chemist, I am simply passing on personal experiences and some advertising messaging put out by major players within the marine trades.

Put your boat away with the gas fuel tank 95% full.

At the beginning of your last fill up, pour in 1 oz. of Sta Bil 360 Marine for every 5 gallons of gas you intend to put in your boat.

Think about buying your Sta Bil 360 either at your nearest convenient marine store or at a low price shop. Google search “Sta Bil 360” at Walmart and Amazon.com. Watch your final costs including shipping and sales tax. Use half as much at every fill-up during the season.

Here is a quote from the fuel stabilizer maker “STA-BIL 360 MARINE offers comprehensive protection by releasing a microscopic corrosion preventing vapor inside the fuel system that coats ALL metals parts, including the fuel tank, fuel sending unit, valves, carburetor, fuel injectors and intake manifold. It’s like fogging oil for your entire fuel system, offering “360 degrees” of corrosion protection and is safe to use in all types of gasoline – from ethanol-free fuel to E85.

STA-BIL 360 MARINE accomplishes everything our current STA-BIL products offer, including keeping fuel fresh, removing water, cleaning the fuel system and more, but this revolutionary new product provides an exciting new level of protection for ultimate performance. For the first time, STA-BIL 360 MARINE delivers corrosion protection above and below the fuel line by releasing an innovative vapor that coats all metal parts within the fuel system to prevent corrosion.

Once poured into a tank of fuel, STA-BIL 360 MARINE will provide a vaporized corrosion inhibitor coating for up to 12 months in a stored boat or equipment.”

This product is new for 2014 and it won the International Boatbuilder’s Exhibition & Conference (IBEX) Innovation Award in the Boat Care and Maintenance category.

IBEX is organized by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and judged by members of Boating Writers International (BWI), the award recognizes innovative distinction from other products currently being manufactured, benefit to the marine industry and consumers, practicality and cost-effectiveness.

Correct Craft (Ski Nautique) buys engine makers

PCM marine engine for two sports boats and inboard cruisers

This is the 343 engine from PCM

Ski Nautique (Nautique Boat Company) www.nautique.com bought both Crusader marine engine company and the PCM marine engine company. These brands share common management which will stay in place. Crusader and PCM engines are made in Little Mountain, SC. Crusader is considered the salt water and/or cruising boat brand, while the PCM makes its name in the ski/wake/surf boat market. Correct Craft boats are made in Orlando, FL. Seabuddy has visited the Nautique plant and gone through their boat building processes. Nice boats.

One of the top selling engines is their 343 horsepower, 350 cubic inch displacement V-8. This is pretty much a cast iron Chevy engine, marinized by PCM. It is a four star engine for the purposed of the EPA. Note, all outboards are still only rated as three star (not as clean burning) engines for the 2015 model year.

They also make other engines with ratings as high as 550 horsepower at 5,400 RPM and a maximum toque at 4,000 RPM. This is a Supercharged engine, based on the Caddy/ Chevy “LSA” engine. This is an aluminum block and heads engine. Note, a rev limiter comes in at 5,600 RPM on this engine.

For 2015, Crusader again offers its new in 2014 model year, Challenger series of marine engines for tow boat or tow sport usage. So, the brands are now starting to overlap, somewhat. That sets them up to be either both a high and value priced brand wthin the market or allows them to offer certain engine brands to certain boat companies.
