The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show opens on October 27 and runs through October 31, 2011.The Boat Show exhibits new boats from boat and yacht companies as well as yacht designers and used or brokered yachts.

A variety of boats and ocean vessels will be on display including runabouts, sport fishing boats, high performance racers, medium sized cabin cruisers, skiffs, express cruisers, motor yachts, bow riders, catamarans, trawlers, inflatables, and extraordinary super yachts.

Covering six locations and some 3 million square feet of space, the show has a transportation network of land bus, water craft, and river boats to get around the show.

A great venue for a boat show, Ft. Lauderdale, has the water and land items that make for a great boating experience.

The best day for most is the first day, although one can’t see all of the show in a day. Take even non boaters with you, it’s a terrific venue.

Billed as “The Ultimate Aid To Navigation,” the program will provide expert instruction in a wide range of subjects pertinent to long-range cruising. Classes range from general cruising topics, such as Crossing the Gulf Stream, Proper Provisioning and Cruising with Children, to master certification courses in Diesel Maintenance, Weather Forecasting and a comprehensive educational package called the Seamanship Series. All classes will be taught by subject matter experts from respected institutions, such as the Annapolis School of Seamanship, while the opportunity to meet other participants who share the cruising dream is a significant bonus.

One of the most unique aspect of Cruisers University is its interactivity, including a large in-water display of boats, both sail and power, outfitted with live-aboard cruising in mind. Participants will not only attend classes, they can become involved with learning through demonstrations of equipment and systems, as well as by taking selected boats out for sea trials during the extended weekend.

The event’s structure allows participants to choose from three programs, with tuitions ranging from $450 for the four-day Masters Certification Program or the Seamanship Series to $160 for the one-day Introduction to Cruising Package. Each package includes breakfast and lunch as well as boat demo boarding passes. The number of courses and inclusions vary at each level. Evening social events featuring music, cocktails and a keynote speaker are available for an additional fee. Special hotel and marina rates and VIP parking passes, are also available for Cruisers University participants.

For a daily admission fee of $15, consumers can view over 150 sail and power cruising boats and 100 boating equipment exhibits.

Moving a small craft to and from the water can be a huge hassle. Quick and convenient, the Wheel-a-Weigh Launching Wheels and Dollies from Davis Instruments simplify the whole process.

Constructed of anodized marine aluminum and stainless steel with injection molded wheels and double, hard-rubber tires, the Wheel-a-Weigh Launching Wheels are mounted in tracks permanently installed on the transoms of boats and cartoppers. Wheels lock in the down position for transporting overland and then lock in the up position after launching. Wheels are easily removable for storage or theft prevention.

The Launching Wheels measure 8″ x 1.5″ and can handle 250 lbs. on hard surfaces or 100 lbs. in soft sand. With pneumatic tires, an extra capacity version features 16″ x 4″ wheels and a weight capacity of 300 lbs. on hard surfaces or 200 lbs. in soft sand.

The Wheel-a-Weigh Kayak Dolly features a heavy-duty anodized aluminum axle with rubber tires on injection molded rims. The injection molded bunks are covered with santoprene thermoplastic rubber for non-skid performance even when wet. The bunks are 20″ L x 3″ W and have a fixed spacing of 18″. Spaced 19″ apart, the 11″ x 1.75″ wheels can handle 200 lbs. on hard surfaces and 100 lbs. in soft sand.

Made of heavy-duty anodized aluminum tubing and polypropylene struts with santoprene rubber-covered bunks, the Wheel-a-Weigh Small Boat Dolly is adjustable to fit rowing shells, canoes, sailboats and dinghies. Injection molded, the bunks measure 19″ L x 3″ W and are adjustable from 18″ to 28″. With pneumatic tires, the wheels are 16″ x 4″ and spaced 37″ apart for simple maneuverability. The Small Boat Dolly has a weight capacity of 250 lbs. on hard surfaces and 150 lbs. in soft sand.

Both Wheel-a-Weigh Dollies feature holding straps with delrin quick release buckles and fold-away foot rods to hold the dolly upright, facilitating single-handed loading. The units are easily disassembled for transport. Wheel-a-Weigh systems are not designed to be towed behind a vehicle.

With the growing popularity of wooden boat runabouts among vintage boating and car enthusiasts, Antique Boat Center now offers custom-designed vintage boat trailers for easy launch and retrieval; with features that are ideal for frequent travelers to classic boat shows, as well as the evening sunset cruiser.

The beautiful chrome cutwater, mahogany hull, and often oak frames of vintage boats need more than a budget roller bunk and a polyurethane V-bow stop with a winch hooking to an eye bolt in the stem. For added support and protection, Antique Boat Center’s classic boat trailers start with a C-channel or box frame structure. “I” beam aluminum, sized correctly, provides effective support with reduced weight. A trailer used in brackish or salt water must be galvanized or a combination of aluminum and galvanized cross braces with stainless steel bolts and hardware. Galvanized and aluminum can be painted to match the bottom color of your woodie or interior for a concourse show look. Flush systems can be added if use in salt is a possibility. Select wheels and colors are available to match custom tow vehicles to top off a show-quality antique wooden boat with a classic car or truck.

Jeremy Bragg, chief mechanical technician at the Antique Boat Center, orders all custom trailers with four bunks to give maximum support to the hull. These antique boat trailers also include a drop propeller cage to protect bronze propellers from damage, cresting curbs, or launch ramp challenges.

An adjustable goal post style bow stop, which the rub rail of the deck rests against, supports forward movement of the boat, while allowing movement for cover installation or “slip back” of the classic boat when retrieving from the water. Adjustable load guides help keep the boat centered while loading and are able to be stored on the trailer when not being used.

Adding the biggest small block Mercury Mercruiser engine adds about $7,000 to a base, but nicely equipped and rather hi-tech, built boat. A Bimini is $1,385 and a cockpit and bow cover is $1,275. Now finish off the cockpit with some carpet at $555 and a head with dockside pumpout at $625. Pick a trailer and you are ready for getting on the water in a nice wakeboarding and other water sports bow rider boat. She makes an excellent ski boat.
